Club Championships Finals

All,

Bar one match the Newton Abbot Tennis Club Championship Finals were played on Sunday (13/08) in front of an appreciative crowd.
In both of the singles finals the eventual winners had to stage comebacks with the runner ups going on to gain recompense in their respective doubles finals.
First on court were A squad team-mates Kate Hooper and Susie Gunning in the Ladies final. The latter went into a 4-1 lead but Hooper dug deep to win the first set 7-6 on the tie-break. The second set was equally close before Hooper took the cup by breaking Gunning's last service game for a 6-4 outcome.
Two A team players went head to head in the Men's singles final with Alex Pettit comfortably winning the first set 6-1 against Mark Ayliffe. But that was as good as it got for Pettit as Ayliffe reversed the scoreline in the second set before going onto clinch the trophy by winning the decider 6-3.
Gunning then got some consolation in the Ladies doubles for her earlier setback when teaming up with Ali Ainscough to beat Julie Lee and Katherine Neale 6-3, 7-5 in two close sets.
Pettit was in action again when he partnered Nell Clotworthy to an entertaining 6-2, 6-2 straight set win over Madeline Ramsey and James Brice in the Mixed Doubles.
After the conclusion of an action packed day Mark Ayliffe paid thanks to Club Coach Madeline Ramsey who was the organizing force behind what has been a very successful competition which was very well supported by the ever growing membership at the Club.
The outstanding final, the Men's Doubles, is scheduled for next Sunday (27/08) at 10.30 when Ayliffe will partner Ellis Shelly against Dave Walker and Matt Doye.
